a)
A porous body is a solid that contains holes.
b) The holes maybe connected or disconnected, normally or random distribute, interstitial or planar cracklike features.
c) The degree of connectivity of the pores dictates the permeability of the rock, that is, the ease with which fluid can move throught the rock body.
d) Total porosity = Part of rock that is void space, express as percentage
Total porosity (n) = Vv/Vr=Volume of void / Total volume
e) As the total volume is the sum of the void and solid volum, we can express the relationship in eq. bellow :
Void ratio (e) = Vv/Vs = Void volume / Solid volume
e = n/(1-n) or n = e/(1+ e)
SO
Porosity is a measure of how much of a rock is open space. This space can be between grains or within cracks or cavities of the rock.
Permeability is a measure of the ease with which a fluid (water in this case) can move through a porous rock.
